Short answers to the questions operators ask most — and to the things that are easy to mix up, like Preview vs Simulate vs Launch, or the three kinds of overlay. Click a question to open the answer.

Basics

What is the difference between an Event and a Studio?

A Studio is where you build one template — a face swap style, a collage layout, a boomerang, and so on. Each studio saves a template file.

An Event is the container for one occasion: the templates guests can choose, the design of every screen, sharing and printing settings, and the statistics. The Event is what you launch at the venue.

A studio never stands alone: you build a template, then add it to an event. See Events overview and Studio basics.

What is the difference between a template and a category?

A template is one style a guest can pick (for example "Royal Winter"). A category is a group of templates (for example "AI styles" and "Classic frames") that helps guests find them.

Categories can be shown As Filter on the Template Picker, or As Standalone Page (a separate Category Picker page before the templates). Renaming or deleting a category is safe — templates move to "No Category". See Categories.

Preview, Simulate and Launch — which one tests what?
ButtonWhereWhat it tests
Preview (F9)Every page in the Page DesignerThe look of one page only. No camera, no real session.
Simulate (F10)Camera Page onlyThe whole capture flow — countdown, flash, multiple shots, retake, filters — with sample photos instead of a camera. Nothing is really processed.
Launch (F5)Event list or Event EditorA real kiosk session: real camera, real processing, real print, QR and email.

See Run an event.

Does Launch save my event?

No. Launch runs whatever is in the editor, including unsaved changes, but it does not write them to disk. Click Save after testing. A new event is not saved at all until its first Save, and Survey and Report only appear after that first Save.

What are Easy mode and Expert mode?

Two ways to use the same app. Easy mode starts with "What are you running today?" and builds an event in a few guided steps. Expert mode shows the full Event Editor and all studios. Switch with Switch to Easy mode / Switch to Expert mode at the foot of the main menu. You can hide this switch with Mode switch in Settings › General so a booth stays in one mode. See Interface tour.

Where do I set how many photos are taken per session?

Not on the Camera Page. The number of shots comes from the template — for example a collage with four photo slots takes four photos. The countdown is optional: without a Countdown element the photo is taken immediately.

Design and overlays

Template overlay, event overlay, global overlay — which one is used?

An overlay is a frame image (PNG with a transparent area) laid over the finished result. There are three levels, and the strongest one that is set wins:

  1. Template overlay — set inside the template. Strongest.
  2. Event overlay — OTHERS › Overlay in the event, one frame per aspect ratio.
  3. Global overlay — Settings › Overlay & Filters. A fallback for every event.

See Event overlay and Overlay & filters.

Is a collage frame the same as an overlay?

No. In Collage Studio, the frame is the top layer of the layout itself (an image layer above the photo layers). The overlay is a separate image laid over the finished result. A template's overlay setting can be Default (follow the event/global overlay), Disabled or Custom. See Collage Studio.

How do I turn on email for guests?

There is no "enable email" switch. Place a Send Email button on the Result Page in the Page Designer, and set up Email Share in Settings › QR Share.

AI

What is the difference between AI Offline and AI Online?
AI OfflineAI Online

HardwareNVIDIA RTX graphics card (8 GB VRAM or more)Any supported computer

See AI Offline Studio and AI Online Studio.

Does Face Swap need the AI Offline Server?

No. Face Swap runs on its own and does not need the AI Offline Server to be online, or the internet. Its speed depends on Compute Device (GPU is much faster). The other AI Offline templates (Imagine, Re-Imagine, Composite) do need the server to show Online. See Face Swap.

Built-in tokens or my own API key?

Built-in needs no extra account: you buy tokens on your lumaqube.com account and every generation shows its cost first. 3rd Party uses your own fal.ai or WaveSpeed account; you pay the provider directly and enter the key in Settings › General › AI Online Service. Each provider keeps its own key. See AI Online Studio.

Will AI templates work for groups?

Yes, if the prompt does not describe the people. Describe the scene, clothes and light, and ask to keep everyone the same. See Writing prompts.

Sharing results

Web QR or Local QR?

How it worksThe result is uploaded; the QR opens it on the webThe booth computer serves the file itself over Wi-Fi
InternetNeededNot needed
Guests' phonesAny networkMust join the same Wi-Fi as the booth
After the eventGuests can open the link laterOnly while the booth is running nearby

You can use both, and add email to either. Test each one with its test button before the event. See QR Share settings.

The venue has no internet. Can guests still get their photos?

Yes — use Local QR. Guests scan the QR and download over the booth's own Wi-Fi with no internet involved. You can also print, or use Manual pickup so staff hand results over later.

What are Direct, Email a link and Manual pickup?

They are the result delivery modes in the event settings. Direct: the guest waits and sees the result on screen. Email a link: the guest leaves and gets a link by email (needs Web QR and email). Manual pickup: the result waits in the event gallery for staff. If you enable more than one, guests choose at the booth. Results always go into the event gallery. See Event settings.

Editions and licence

Which edition do I need?
You want…Edition
Photo booth, collage and strips, boomerang / motion, Gallery with QR sharingBasic and up
Face Swap and AI OnlineAdvanced Pro
AI Offline on your own GPUPro
Lenticular, Flipbook, AR StudioPro, or as an add-on for Basic and Advanced

You can upgrade later and keep your templates, events and settings. The full comparison is on the products page of lumaqube.com.

Is there a trial?

Yes. The trial is Q-Booth Advanced with Lenticular and Flipbook unlocked. Start it at lumaqube.com/trial.

Can I use Q-Booth without internet?

Mostly yes. Capture, printing, Photo, Collage, Motion, Face Swap, AI Offline and Local QR all work offline. AI Online, Web QR, email and licence activation need internet.

A cloud licence checks in over the internet once every 24 hours by default; this can be extended on request. For weeks or months offline, a USB dongle licence is available — it never checks in.

Can one licence run two booths?

One licence runs on one computer at a time. For two booths at once you need two licences. You can move a licence to another computer yourself.

How do I move my licence to a new computer?

On the old computer, open About › Deactivate License, type the confirmation number and click Confirm. Then activate the same License ID on the new computer. Logout Session is different: it ends the session but keeps the licence on this computer. See Installation.

How do I update Q-Booth?

Q-Booth tells you a few seconds after start-up when a new version is out (never during an event): click Update Now. You can also check in About › Check for Updates. Update additional content refreshes AI packs and shared content. Your settings and events stay.

Hardware

Which cameras can I use?

Webcams and USB cameras (including virtual cameras), Canon DSLR and mirrorless bodies with live view, and GoPro. Q-Booth supports two cameras at once (Camera 1 and Camera 2). See Camera settings.

Which printers work?

Any photo printer with a Windows driver. Q-Booth can use more than one printer. See Printer settings.

Do I need a graphics card?

Only for AI Offline, which needs an NVIDIA RTX card with at least 8 GB VRAM. Face Swap and Face Restore run without one but are much faster on an NVIDIA RTX 30-series or newer card with the GPU Pack. See System requirements.

Running and after the event

How do I exit the running event?

Press Shift + F4 or double-click the top-right corner. Esc is disabled on purpose. If a PIN is set, you are asked for it. To open the gallery during an event (when allowed): Shift + F2 or double-click the top-left corner.

Export Event, Backup or Archive — what is the difference?
ActionWhat it does
Export EventSaves only the design (pages, templates, categories) as .qevent. No statistics, no photos. For reuse or moving to another computer.
BackupSaves everything — design, statistics, photos and activity log — as .qeventbak, for full recovery.
ArchiveHides the event from the Ready list. Nothing is deleted; you can undo it.
Reset EventClears transactions, counters, contacts, survey answers and result photos, but keeps the design. Back up first.
Delete EventMoves the event to Trash; it can still be restored from there.

See Backup & export.

How do I get help?

Check Troubleshooting first. If you still need help, export the logs in Settings › Other › Export Logs and send the ZIP with your version number (from About) to support. Updates and support are included for the life of the licence.
